Joey Graybeal comes out on top after closest Masters ever

Joey Graybeal won the 30th US Masters in a sudden-death playoff against Ricard Lockner after both finished 12 rounds at 372. Lockner was going for a third straight title.

Wade Sahmel took a two-stroke lead into the final round. He had shot the low round of the week, a 25, twice on Aloha. A closing 38 dropped him into a tie for sixth. Lockner started the round two back and shot 32. Graybeal started three back and closed with a 31 to force the playoff.

Randy Reeves finished third at 373, one stroke back, after a 26 and a 27 in rounds nine and ten. Rick Baird and Brian Johnson tied for fourth at 374. Johnson led after each of the first four rounds.

The top three finished within one stroke and the top five within two. That is the closest finish in Masters history.

Rain washed out Saturday, and the 87-player field finished in two days. John Ventura matched the low round with a 25 on Aloha. Olivia Prokopova was eighth, and Kevin Sundström was the next-best Swede in tenth.
